When Rakuten is actually worth using
Rakuten is most worthwhile when a purchase was already planned and the displayed rate improves the outcome without making the price, shipping or terms worse. Cash Back is not by itself a reason to create a new expense.
Before clicking through, compare the direct price, the displayed regular or boosted rate, the exclusions and the value of your card rewards. The useful question is not only “what percentage will I earn?” but “what is my net result for the same purchase, with the same merchant and the same conditions?”
- Good use case: a needed purchase, an eligible merchant, a clear rate and a comparable price after shipping and returns.
- Worth comparing: a boosted-rate period, a larger purchase or a purchase where your card's rewards genuinely apply.
- Good reason to skip it: an impulse purchase, a higher portal price, an unclear exclusion or something you would not buy without the promise of Cash Back.
This is why Rakuten can still be useful at a regular rate, while a spectacular rate does not automatically turn a poor buying decision into a good deal.
Rakuten vs. Great Canadian Rebates (GCR): Which Should You Use?
Rakuten and Great Canadian Rebates are two cashback options available in Canada. Available merchants may differ, as may the rates shown for a particular merchant or promotion.
For a significant purchase, it can therefore be useful to compare both platforms before clicking through. Rakuten remains an excellent option, but no portal is automatically best for every purchase.

Rakuten is one of the cashback portals I use for online shopping. Rakuten receives a commission from partner merchants and returns part of it to members as Cash Back.
Personal experience: I created my Rakuten account in 2013 and have accumulated $212.75 CAD in cashback, paid over time through PayPal and by cheque. That represents more than 12 years of direct use.
Account observation: as of October 13, 2026, $270 in referral bonuses (three $40 bonuses from the August 2026 promotion and five $30 bonuses) appear as Scheduled for the November 15, 2026 payment, with no confirmed purchase Cash Back; two more $30 bonuses are still Pending. This is an account observation, not a contractual guarantee for every account.
To maximize the platform, apply the Triple Stack strategy:

Why is the bonus different in Canada and the United States?
Rakuten runs separate programs by country, each with its own currency and terms. The Canadian program pays in CAD; the U.S. program pays in USD and requires a U.S. referral link. Amounts and terms do not combine.
Are Rakuten Canada and Ebates Canada the same company?
