No Orange Key is required. The offer applies to new clients whose Client Number is created from May 1, 2024 through October 31, 2026. They must open the chequing account as Primary Account Holder within 60 days, switch the full amount of eligible recurring payroll deposits so the first is received within 60 days of opening, and receive at least $200 per month for at least two consecutive months. The $250 bonus is paid in the following month after all conditions are satisfied.

Promotional savings rate

For eligible clients whose Client Number is created from July 28, 2026 through November 30, 2026, the promotional period is 153 days: 4.50% applies to eligible non-registered savings accounts, while 5.00% applies to eligible registered savings accounts such as TFSA and RSP Savings Accounts under the Tangerine terms.

Eligibility for one offer does not automatically guarantee eligibility for another. Review the current Tangerine terms before applying.

💡 Why they may be combined: the $250 offer uses qualifying payroll direct deposits and does not require an additional Orange Key. Each offer remains subject to its own eligibility rules and timing.

🧮 Your estimated potential benefit

Enter an amount from $0 to $1,000,000 with at most two decimals (point or comma). At least $250 is required for the potential Orange Key bonus. Enter an amount from $0 to $1,000,000 with at most two decimals (point or comma).

The calculator is an estimate, not a guarantee of eligibility or payout. It uses the selected promotional rate for an illustrative five-month period. The current advertised rates are 4.50% for eligible non-registered savings accounts and 5.00% for eligible registered savings accounts. Rates, eligible account types and offer terms can change. Situational account fees may apply.

Getting both — step-by-step order

  1. Open your account with Orange Key 28709877S1

At the first step of the form, enter 28709877S1 in the combined "Orange Key / Promo Code (optional)" field. Choose a no-fee chequing account.

  2. Deposit $250 within the first 60 days

Transfer $250 within 60 days and keep that balance for 60 consecutive days. Tangerine may credit the $50 within the following 30 days, subject to eligibility.

  3. Redirect your payroll deposit (≥ $200/month)

If your Client Number was created from May 1, 2024 through October 31, 2026, open the chequing account as Primary Account Holder within 60 days. Then provide your employer with the Tangerine banking details (institution 614, transit 00152) and switch your full eligible recurring payroll deposit so the first payment arrives within 60 days of account opening.

  4. Maintain your payroll deposits for two consecutive months

The full amount of eligible recurring payroll deposits must total at least $200 per month for at least two consecutive months. Tangerine pays the $250 bonus in the following month after all offer conditions are satisfied.

Is Tangerine worth it in 2026? Honest verdict

Short answer: Tangerine can suit Canadians looking for a $0 monthly account fee and separate referral and payroll offers, with an important trade-off around cash and branch access. Tangerine is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Scotiabank and a CDIC member in its own right. Eligible new clients may combine the $50 Orange Key referral with the $250 payroll offer for up to $300 when all conditions are met. Situational fees still apply.

Tangerine is a strong fit if you…Tangerine is a weaker fit if you…
Want a chequing account with no monthly fee, no minimum balance Rely on frequent cash deposits or in-branch service (no physical branches)
Bank mostly online or by app (deposits, bill payments, e-Transfers) Withdraw often at non-Scotiabank ATMs in Canada ($1.50) or outside the Global ATM Alliance abroad ($3.00), not reimbursed
Can route a payroll direct deposit to unlock the $250 bonus Can't set up a recurring payroll deposit (the separate $50 Orange Key bonus remains conditional on its own eligibility and the required $250 balance held for 60 consecutive days; it is not the $250 payroll offer)
Already use the Scotiabank ABM network, or live near one Need overdraft protection on the base chequing account (an NSF item is declined and still costs $10)

Why your Tangerine bonus didn't apply (and how to avoid it)

These two bonuses have separate conditions. The most common failures are:

$50 Orange Key — why it fails

  • Key entered too late. The Orange Key goes in the combined "Orange Key / Promo Code (optional)" field at the very first enrollment step — not at checkout, not after the account exists. No retroactive field.
  • Balance dropped below $250. The $250 must stay in the account for 60 consecutive days. Pulling funds out early resets eligibility.
  • Wrong account type. The referral bonus is tied to opening an eligible account as the primary holder — confirm the account you opened qualifies.

$250 payroll bonus — why it fails

  • Deposit isn't a true payroll direct deposit. The full amount of your payroll must be deposited as an eligible automated and recurring payroll direct deposit — a manual transfer or e-Transfer from your own account does not count.
  • Under the $200/month floor. Payroll must total at least $200 per month, and continue for at least 2 consecutive months.
  • Set up outside the window. The first eligible payroll deposit must land within 60 days of opening the chequing account, which itself must be opened within 60 days of your Client Number being created.

If you met every condition and still don't see the credit after the stated window, contact Tangerine with your dates — bonuses are paid on a defined schedule, not instantly.

Tangerine vs Traditional Banks — 2026 Comparison

Tangerine uses the Scotiabank ABM network while offering a $0 monthly account fee. Other situational fees can still apply.

To compare Tangerine with two other no-monthly-fee options, see our Achieva, Tangerine and EQ Bank comparison and separate the base rate, condition and promotion.

💰 Real-world savings example — switching from traditional banking to Tangerine

Standard monthly bank fees: ~$15/month
Tangerine with Orange Key: $0/month

Difference: $15/month → $180 saved per year, plus up to $300 in potential referral and payroll bonuses after their separate conditions are met. This example does not include situational fees.

Tangerine vs other bank bonuses (Simplii, EQ Bank)

If you're hunting the best bank bonus in Canada, it's worth knowing how Tangerine's offer compares to the other popular online banks. They reward different things, so the "best" one depends on how you bank.

CriteriaTangerine + Orange KeySimplii FinancialEQ Bank
Owned by Scotiabank CIBC Equitable Bank
Welcome bonus model Separate referral and payroll offers (potentially $50 + $250) Payroll direct-deposit bonus $20 referral bonus for an eligible new customer opening a Personal Account with a valid referral link and funding it with at least $100 within 30 calendar days of activation (terms)
Monthly fee $0 $0 $0
ATM fees Free at eligible Scotiabank / Global ATM Alliance ABMs; others not reimbursed Free on CIBC network; others not reimbursed Reimburses ATM fees (any Interac ATM, up to a cap)
Best for Stacking two bonuses with payroll + a referral key A single payroll-deposit cash bonus Frequent ATM users / travellers
🔍 How to choose: pick Tangerine if you want to stack a referral ($50) and a payroll bonus ($250) at a Big-Five-backed bank. Pick Simplii if you just want one straightforward payroll-deposit bonus. Pick EQ Bank if you withdraw cash often and value ATM-fee reimbursement. Promotional amounts and conditions change frequently — always confirm the current terms on each bank's official page before opening.

My experience with Tangerine and the Orange Key

✓ Verified by Cash Instinct

I have been a Tangerine client for several years, so I am no longer eligible for the current new-client offers described in this guide. I have not personally received the current $50 new-client referral bonus or the current $250 payroll promotion.

I have, however, used my Orange Key to refer other people and have received Tangerine referral credits, including under the current $50 referral program as well as earlier versions of the program, whose amounts and terms were different.

For the current requirements, this guide relies on Tangerine's official terms, public enrollment form and promotional pages rather than on a recent application submitted in my own name.

One thing to watch out for: the Orange Key must be entered during sign-up. If the field is missed, contact Tangerine promptly; the published referral terms require enrollment with a valid Orange Key and do not promise retroactive application.

Does opening a Tangerine account affect your credit score?

For an ordinary chequing or savings account opening, the available sources converge on a soft or no-score-impact check. Tangerine's official account terms nevertheless allow it to verify information through credit bureaus or similar third parties for identity purposes; they do not say whether the check is soft or hard, or whether it affects your score.

A recent Canadian banking guide and Canadian consumer reports point in the same direction, but these are non-contractual indications: Tangerine does not officially guarantee that outcome.

Overdraft protection, a limit increase, a credit card or a line of credit are separate credit applications and should be assessed separately. For more context and a way to follow your Equifax score and report, see our Borrowell guide to credit scores and reports.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Orange Key 28709877S1 stackable with the $250 bonus?

The two offers use separate mechanisms and may be combined when all of their respective conditions are met. Orange Key 28709877S1 must be entered during enrollment for the $50 referral program. The separate $250 offer depends on qualifying payroll direct deposits and does not require an additional code.

Where exactly do I enter the Orange Key?

In the combined "Orange Key / Promo Code (optional)" field at the first step of the Tangerine sign-up form — before choosing your account type, before entering personal information, before payment. It is the very first screen of the sign-up process.

How long does it take to receive the $50 bonus?

Timing depends on when you make the initial deposit. You have 60 days to deposit at least $250, must then maintain a minimum $250 balance for 60 consecutive days, and Tangerine may pay the referral bonus within 30 days after all requirements are met, subject to eligibility.

How do I activate the $250 direct deposit bonus?

No additional code is required. The offer is available to new clients whose Client Number is created from May 1, 2024 through October 31, 2026. Open a Tangerine Chequing Account as Primary Account Holder within 60 days of that date, then switch the full amount of eligible recurring payroll direct deposits so the first is received within 60 days of opening. Deposits must total at least $200 per month and continue for at least two consecutive months. Tangerine pays the $250 bonus in the following month after all offer conditions are satisfied.

Is Tangerine available in Quebec?

Yes. Tangerine offers its full banking services in Quebec. The mobile app, website, and customer service are fully available in French.

What are the Tangerine banking codes for direct deposit?

Institution number: 614. Transit number: 00152. Your personal account number is accessible in the Tangerine mobile app, under your account details.

Is a Tangerine Orange Key the same as a promo code?

Tangerine currently uses a combined “Orange Key / Promo Code” field during registration. An Orange Key is Tangerine's referral code, while other promotional codes may belong to separate bank campaigns. Enter Orange Key 28709877S1 in that field to request the $50 referral offer, subject to the program requirements. Only one Orange Key or promotional code can be entered in this field. This one-code limitation does not prevent the separate $250 payroll offer from being combined when all of its conditions are met.

Is Tangerine safe and CDIC insured?

Yes. Tangerine Bank is a member of the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC) in its own right, with eligible deposits insured up to $100,000 per category, independently of Scotiabank. It is a Schedule I Canadian bank, wholly owned by Scotiabank, and regulated by OSFI and the FCAC.

Does Tangerine have monthly fees?

No. The chequing and savings accounts have $0 monthly fees, no minimum balance, and unlimited free transactions. Situational fees exist (such as a $10 NSF fee, $1.50 for non-Scotiabank ABM withdrawals in Canada or $3.00 outside the Global ATM Alliance abroad, and $50 for an additional cheque book; one stop payment is free per year, then $12.50) and are disclosed up front.

Who owns Tangerine?

Tangerine is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Scotiabank (The Bank of Nova Scotia), one of Canada's Big Five banks. It launched as ING Direct in 1997, was acquired by Scotiabank in 2012, and rebranded to Tangerine in 2014.

Is there a minimum deposit to open a Tangerine account?

No minimum deposit is required to open the account, and there is no minimum balance to maintain. The bonuses have their own funding conditions: a $250 balance kept 60 consecutive days for the $50 Orange Key, and payroll of at least $200 per month for the $250 bonus.

How long does it take to open an account, and what do I need?

Sign-up takes a few minutes in the app: choose Sign Up Digitally, scan a valid government-issued photo ID, take a selfie to match it, and enter your details. You must be a Canadian resident at the age of majority in your province or territory, with a Canadian mailing address.

Is the Tangerine bonus taxable?

The tax treatment of a bank promotion may depend on the nature of the offer and your circumstances. Taxable interest generally must be reported even when no T5 slip is issued. Tangerine, the Canada Revenue Agency, or a qualified tax professional can confirm the treatment that applies to your promotion. This is general information, not tax advice.

What happens if I close the account after getting the bonus?

You must meet all the offer conditions first: for the $50 Orange Key, keeping $250 for 60 consecutive days; for the $250 bonus, payroll for 2 consecutive months. Closing early or pulling funds before the holding period ends can disqualify the bonus. Always read the specific offer terms before closing.

Can I deposit cash, and how do I access ATMs?

Yes. You can deposit cash at Scotiabank branch ABMs and deposit cheques in-app with Cheque-In. Withdrawals are free at eligible Scotiabank or Global ATM Alliance ABMs. Tangerine charges $1.50 at other ABMs in Canada and $3.00 outside the Global ATM Alliance in the US/worldwide, without reimbursement. Other fees, including foreign currency conversion fees, continue to apply.

Does Tangerine have a debit card?

Yes. The Tangerine Client Card with Visa Debit works anywhere Visa is accepted and can be added to Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay. It is covered by Interac and Visa Debit Zero Liability protection against unauthorized purchases.
