Chexy referrals work by link (there is no code to enter at sign-up). The 2026 program provides $20 for you and your friend when the friend has completed an eligible first payment in the mobile app. This credit isn't a bank transfer: it's applied as a reduction on a payment you make through Chexy.

💳 What Chexy is for: paying by credit card for expenses you normally can't put on a card — property and school taxes, Hydro, income taxes (CRA and Revenu Québec), rent, tuition. You pay by card; the payee receives a regular Interac transfer. Fee: 1.75% per transaction.

🧮 When it's worth it: as soon as your card earns more than 1.75% in points or rewards, and especially to hit the spending threshold of a credit card welcome bonus using expenses you'd pay anyway.

Updated

Transparency: I have personally used Chexy since June 2026 and have received the $20 welcome credit as well as one or more $20 referral credits. If you sign up through my link and meet the current terms, you may receive a $20 Chexy credit; Chexy may also give me a referral credit, at no extra cost to you. Amounts and conditions can change. Full disclosure appears at the bottom of this page.

Is Chexy worth it? The fees vs points math

The principle is simple: Chexy charges you 1.75% to put an expense on your card. You come out ahead as soon as your card earns more than that in points or rewards — provided you pay off 100% of the balance every month (otherwise interest wipes out the entire advantage).

🧮 Your fee-and-reward estimate

Estimate only. Chexy fees are illustrated using the selected tier for Canadian cards, and the reduced rate may be limited to $50,000/year. The calculation assumes the balance is paid in full and excludes interest, tax treatment and bonus eligibility. Check current rates and terms.

💳 Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite+ update: according to Chexy's official announcement, from October 22, 2026, rent, household expenses, condo/strata fees, property tax and income tax payments will earn 1% instead of 4%. For those categories, the reward rate becomes lower than Chexy's 1.75% base fee. This mainly removes Scotia from this specific example: other cards can still earn 2% or 3% depending on the category, with their own caps, annual fees and coding rules. Utilities, car lease, daycare, tuition, insurance, wellness/gym, and phone/telecommunications are announced as remaining at 4%. The card charge date matters, not the payment due date.
🧭 In short: on $6,500 of taxes and Hydro with a card that actually earns 2% on those categories, you pay ~$114 in fees for ~$130 in rewards — already positive. But the real lever is using Chexy to hit the spending threshold of a credit card welcome bonus: there, the return far exceeds the fees.

How to pay your taxes and bills by card with Chexy

⚠️ Critical rule: sign up via the referral link (there is no code to enter at account creation) and complete an eligible first payment in the mobile app. Check the current terms and payment status before relying on the reward.
🔍 Before sending a large amount: always make a $50 to $100 test payment and check your statement to confirm it appears as a regular purchase (not a cash advance) and that it counts toward your bonus threshold if applicable. Some issuers are picky.
  1. Sign up via the referral link

Create a new Chexy account through the referral link and complete an eligible first payment in the mobile app. There is no code to enter: attribution is by link only.

  2. Check that your payee is in the directory

Search for your city (property/school taxes), Hydro, Revenu Québec or the CRA in the Chexy payee directory. Not all payees are available — confirm before scheduling a large payment.

  3. Make a $50 to $100 test payment

Before sending a large amount, make a small test payment on your card. Check your statement to confirm it appears as a regular purchase (not a cash advance) and that it counts toward your bonus threshold if applicable.

  4. Pay your taxes and bills and earn points

Once the test is validated, put your taxes, your Hydro bill or your income taxes on your card via Chexy. Pay the balance in full to keep the net points advantage.

The Chexy tier system: Pink, Gold, Elite

The more people you refer, the higher your tier and the lower your fees. Important: the 2026 program keeps the $20 credit at every tier and adds reduced fees starting at Pink. The credit follows an eligible first payment completed in the mobile app under the current terms.

Your fees drop with your tier

1.75% Starter
1+ referral
+ $20 credit
1.5% Pink
3+ referrals
+ $20 credit
1.0% Gold
5+ referrals
+ $20 credit
0.5% Elite
10+ referrals
+ $20 credit

💡 New for 2026: if your referral group completes enough payments during the year (15 for Pink, 50 for Gold, 250 for Elite, between Jan 1 and Dec 31, 2026), your tier is extended until December 31, 2027. The reduction applies to a maximum of $50,000 in payments per calendar year.

📌 When does a referral count? The person you refer must be a new Chexy user who signs up through the link and completes an eligible first payment in the mobile app — signing up isn't enough. Only referrals from the current calendar year count toward your tier.

The bonus is not necessarily instant. The reward may depend on the payment reaching the applicable status under the current terms; the two sources use different wording. Allow time for processing before expecting the $20 credit.

Is Chexy worth it in 2026? Honest verdict

Short answer: yes if you have large mandatory expenses and a card that earns more than 1.75%, or if you want to unlock a welcome bonus. Here's who it suits — and who it doesn't.

Chexy suits you if you…Chexy suits you less if you…
Have taxes, rent, income taxes or large bills to pay and a card with good rewards Have no large fixed expense to run through the platform (the benefit shrinks)
Want to hit a welcome bonus threshold without wasteful spending Don't pay your balance in full every month (interest cancels everything)
Want to earn points on expenses that normally earn nothing (Hydro, taxes) Have a card earning less than 1.75% in rewards (you lose money)
Are willing to refer a few people to lower your own fees Want pure cashback with no card optimization (Chexy isn't built for that)
🧭 In short: Chexy is an optimization tool, not a giveaway. It turns mandatory expenses into points, and the referral link adds $20 along the way. The trade-off: you need a card earning more than 1.75% and you must pay the balance in full. For an optimizer, the math wins.

Is Chexy safe?

Chexy is a Canadian fintech acting as a payment intermediary. On the payee's side, nothing changes: your landlord, your city, Hydro or Revenu Québec receives a standard Interac transfer or bill payment, without having to sign up for Chexy.

Regular purchase transactionsChexy codes its payments as regular purchases (not cash advances), which earns points and usually counts toward a welcome bonus.
The payee changes nothingYour city, Hydro or your landlord receives a regular Interac transfer. No sign-up required on their end.
Aeroplan partnershipChexy is among Air Canada's Aeroplan partners, a sign of established integration in the Canadian rewards ecosystem.
Golden rulePay your balance in full every month. Credit card interest would instantly cancel the points advantage.

What you can pay by credit card in Quebec

Chexy lets you pay by card for payments normally limited to debit or cheque. In Quebec, the most useful payees:

Payment typeDetails
Municipal and school taxesPay your tax bill by card. Check that your municipality is in the Chexy directory.
Hydro-QuébecPay your electricity bill by card — an expense that normally earns nothing.
Income taxes (Revenu Québec and CRA)Submit your tax payment by card via Bill Pay.
RentPay your rent by card; Chexy sends an Interac transfer to your landlord.
TuitionAccepted universities include UdeM, UQAM, UQAC, UQO and TÉLUQ.

The payee directory is specific and dynamic: not all municipalities are available. Confirm your payee in Chexy before scheduling a payment.

My review of Chexy

✓ Based on personal use

I have personally used Chexy since June 2026. I have used it to pay Hydro-Québec, municipal taxes and school taxes by credit card. I have also received the $20 new-client welcome credit and one or more $20 referral credits.

My personal experience therefore confirms these three payment types and the stated credits. It does not represent a test of every Chexy payee or feature.

The thing to watch: the actual value depends on the applicable fee, your card's return and paying the balance in full. Rates, payees and conditions can change, so check them before scheduling a large payment.

Frequently asked questions about Chexy

Is there a Chexy referral code, or do you need a link?

Chexy referrals work by link, not by code: at account creation, there is no field to enter a referral code. The 2026 program provides $20 for the referrer and referred friend when the friend has completed an eligible first payment in the mobile app. Note: Chexy does have a "promo code" concept, but it applies at a different step — when completing a payment, for existing customers — not at account creation.

Can you pay municipal and school taxes by credit card in Quebec?

Yes, indirectly, via Chexy. Most Quebec municipalities don't accept credit cards directly, but Chexy charges your card (Visa, Mastercard or Amex) with a 1.75% fee, then sends the payment to your city by Interac transfer or Bill Pay. Your city receives a normal payment. Check that your municipality is in the Chexy payee directory before scheduling.

Can you pay Hydro by credit card?

Hydro doesn't accept credit cards directly. Chexy works around this limit: you pay your Hydro bill by card via Chexy (1.75% fee), and Hydro receives the payment as a standard bill payment. It's useful for earning card points on an expense that normally earns nothing.

What are Chexy's fees?

The base fee is 1.75% per transaction for Canadian credit cards (Visa, Mastercard and Amex). Debit payment is free. International cards are charged 2.5%. Fees drop based on your referral tier: 1.5% (Pink, 3 referrals), 1.0% (Gold, 5 referrals), 0.5% (Elite, 10 referrals), up to a maximum of $50,000 in payments per calendar year. Note: on a business account, the rate is 1.99% (taxes, rent, utilities).

Is Chexy worth it?

Chexy is worth it as soon as your credit card earns more than the 1.75% fee in points or rewards value on the payment category involved, provided you pay 100% of the balance every month. On a card that actually earns 2% or 3% on the category, you can still come out ahead. Conversely, Chexy says the Scotia Momentum Visa Infinite+ will drop to 1% on October 22, 2026 for rent, household expenses, condo/strata fees, property tax and income tax: at a 1.75% fee, the net return becomes negative for those payments. Compare each card's category, cap and annual fee rather than generalizing this change to Chexy. It's even more advantageous for hitting a welcome bonus spending threshold: paying $6,500 of taxes and Hydro costs about $114 in fees but can unlock a bonus worth several hundred dollars.

How does the Chexy tier system work: Pink, Gold, Elite?

The more people you refer, the higher your tier and the lower your fees: Starter (1+ referral) gives $20 credit; Pink (3+) gives $20 credit and reduces the fee to 1.5%; Gold (5+) gives $20 credit and reduces the fee to 1.0%; Elite (10+) gives $20 credit and reduces the fee to 0.5%. The 2026 program keeps the $20 credit and adds the reduced fee at the higher tiers. New for 2026: if your crew (the people you refer) completes enough payments during the year — 15 for Pink, 50 for Gold, 250 for Elite — your existing tier is extended until December 31, 2027. Only your referrals' payments count (not your own), and the extension prolongs your current tier without bumping you up.

Is Chexy available in Quebec?

Yes. Chexy works fully in Quebec and lets you pay rent, property and school taxes, income taxes (CRA and Revenu Québec), tuition (UdeM, UQAM, UQAC, UQO, TÉLUQ) and bills like Hydro. The interface and service are available in French.

Does a Chexy payment count toward a credit card welcome bonus?

Chexy codes its payments as regular purchase transactions, not as a cash advance — which is why they earn points and generally count toward a welcome bonus. Some issuers are stricter: before sending a large amount, make a $50 to $100 test payment and check your statement to confirm the transaction appears as a purchase and counts toward your bonus threshold.

Is Chexy safe?

Chexy is a Canadian fintech acting as a payment intermediary. The payee (landlord, city, Hydro, Revenu Québec) receives an Interac transfer or standard bill payment, without having to sign up for Chexy. Your payments are processed as regular purchase transactions on your card. As with any financial service, pay your balance in full to avoid interest that would cancel the advantage.

How do you receive the $20 Chexy bonus?

Sign up as a new user through the referral link (there is no code to enter at sign-up), then complete an eligible first payment in the mobile app. Once the qualifying payment is processed, the $20 credit is applied under the current terms.

Does Chexy accept Interac transfer payments?

Yes. When you pay rent or a bill, Chexy sends the money to the payee by Interac transfer, pre-authorized debit (PAD) or Bill Pay, depending on the payee. If your recipient has enabled Interac auto-deposit, the payment is deposited automatically, usually in under 30 minutes. You pay by credit card; the payee receives a regular transfer.

Can you pay your Revenu Québec or CRA income taxes by credit card with Chexy?

Yes. Chexy submits your tax payment to the CRA, Revenu Québec or local municipalities via Bill Pay. You pay by credit card (1.75% fee) and the agency receives its payment. It's a way to earn points on a tax payment, as long as the value of your points exceeds the fees.

When does a Chexy referral count, and is the bonus instant?

The person you refer must be a new Chexy user who signs up through the link and completes an eligible first payment in the mobile app — signing up alone isn't enough. The bonus is not necessarily instant: a payment may remain in progress for a few days before the credit appears. Only referrals from the current calendar year count toward your tier.

Referral link or promo code: what's the difference?

These are two distinct mechanics, with different conditions. The referral link attaches at account creation (no code to enter), and the 2026 program provides a $20/$20 reward after the referred friend completes an eligible first payment in the mobile app. The cited guide does not state a minimum payment amount. The promo code is a discount applied at the payment step, and only on a recurring payment: it doesn't work on a one-time payment (like a single tax payment), nor retroactively on a payment already completed or in progress. In practice: use the link for the $20, and if you also have a promo code, save it for a recurring payment.

When is your Chexy credit issued, and how do you use it?

Your credit (referral bonus or Chexy Cash) is added after a payment has been successfully completed: bill payment sent, Interac transfer deposited, pre-authorized debit (PAD) withdrawn, or EFT processed. To use it, you redeem it on your next payment: in the "Wallet" for an existing payment, or directly at the checkout screen for a new one. Important detail: redeem your credit before your card is charged — that's about 4 business days before the due date for an existing payment. The credit applies to both recurring and one-time payments, but cannot be withdrawn or transferred: it only serves to reduce your payments through Chexy.

Is the $20 bonus a transfer or a credit?

It's a Chexy credit, not a transfer to your bank account. Once the first eligible payment is completed in the mobile app and processed under the current terms, the $20 appears as a credit balance in your Chexy account. You then redeem it via the "Redeem" button (in the Wallet or at the checkout screen) to reduce a future payment made through Chexy. The credit cannot be withdrawn or transferred and may take time to appear while the payment is processed.
